The Tadoba tiger reserve which is a hit with all wildlife lovers, has a long history to its establishment. The reserve was established in 1935 while in 1955 it was declared as a national park. Later in 1995, Tadoba and Andhari national park was merged in one, and the whole area is known as Tadoba Andhari Reserve.Historical PresenceThe Tadoba national park is located near Chandrapur which has its own ancient history. Chandrapur was ruled by the Gond kings who ruled most of the central India that is currently known as Vidhraba. During this era, hunting was completely banned in 1935. After two decades, this reserve was declared as a national park. The Gond Fort of Chandrapur is the pillar of Gond dynasty in the region. There was a long stretch of rope that was tied to the bell on the fort. It was rung in the direction, the king was travelling.
Mythological Presence
An urban legend from the region says that the village chief Taru was once killed by a mythological tiger in a fierce encounter. As a mark of respect and love towards Taru, a temple is built near a huge tree on the banks of lake Tadoba. One will always notice this temple when they pass by this area. This temple is frequently visited by adivasis in the month of Pausha i.e. between December and January. A fair is held during this period.
The Tadoba-Andhari Tiger reserve stretches for approximately 625 sq. Km. If you travel to this area, you will witness huge cover of fauna and flora. There are about 43 tigers in the area, which is one of the highest in India. The south tropical dry deciduous forest make up almost 87 percent of the trees in the reserve.
